Our Background
DEVIATE Furniture Design was founded in the UK by Matt Simpson, a British engineer and entrepreneur with a keen interest in premium product design and low volume manufacture.
Matt started work at the age of 16 and hasn't stopped since. He first held a number of roles in catering and hospitality whilst studying for his A levels and then his degree in Mechanical Engineering at Aston University.
He is now an engineer with ten years of experience in the automotive industry, across multiple disciplines from supplier-led chassis component manufacturing, to vehicle-level design, decision making, issue resolution, testing, validation and sign off.
This varied experience gave the company a great head start, and has provided the business with the ability to design, develop and manufacture a product which meets all of its functional attribute requirements. DEVIATE actively uses a number of industry-recognised engineering tools and techniques to develop its designs and manufacturing processes.
Matt first showed enthusiasm for designing and making furniture at the age of 11 during woodwork classes at school. He designed and produced his first coffee table aged 15. The business now has a wealth of knowledge in wood and metal working processes, including complex welding, joinery, cutting, bending and finishing techniques. We also have access to professionals with electrical, laser cutting, additive manufacturing (3D printing) and upholstery skills.
DEVIATE always applies a methodical and creative approach to design, which takes into account the visual design impact, material quality and robustness in equal measures.
Our Philosophy
DEVIATE has a very clear design philosophy. Our commitment to individual and creative design is maintained throughout any challenges faced during either the design or the manufacture of any of our pieces of furniture.
Our Products
All DEVIATE products are bespoke and hand crafted, using a unique combination of traditional and state-of-the-art techniques. Other than one-of-a-kind design, one of the founder's passions is to help secure the future existence of long-standing manufacturing methods which are currently under threat of extinction, due to the ever-increasing economic pressures being felt in all manufacturing industries.
Materials of the highest possible quality are used in the creation of all DEVIATE furniture, from chrome-plated high-carbon steel to solid American White Ash and tropical hardwoods such as Sapele.
